Casa Del Falco - Places to Visit

Square in Bisenti

Bisenti

Bisenti (6km) has an attractive medieval centre, 2 excellent supermarkets, a good variety of shops including a wonderful if expensive chocolatiere and a street market every Tuesday morning. There are also several bars and a couple of pizzerias - we like the Val Fino pizzeria in particular.

Castiglione MR

Castiglione Messer Raimondo

Castiglione (6km) also has an attractive medieval centre but only a few shops, mainly in the newer part. There is a nice walk below the ramparts on the SW side of the village.

Castelli

Castelli

Castelli (25km) is a small town overshadowed by the Appenines with numerous workshops where they have been making ceramics since the middle ages. Don't miss San Donato, 1km from the town, with its 16C ceiling entirely decorated with ceramic tiles painted with coats-of-arms, human figures and animals etc. Also a fine museum.

Penne

Penne

Penne (6km) (27km) was once the ancient centre the Vestini, but little of this remains. In the middle ages it was owned for a while by the Medici family. Amongst its churches are: the Duomo, the Church of S. Nicola and the Church of S. Agostino. Palaces include the Palazzo Castiglione, the Palace of the Bono-Pilotta (17C), and the Palazzo Castiglione De Leone (17C).

Campo Imperatore

Campo Imperatore

The Campo Imperatore (50km) is a large plateau high the Appenines. Carpeted with wild flowers in the summer, but deep in snow in winter. Mussolini was imprisoned here and the Campo has served as a location for several spaghetti westerns.

Fresco at Atri

Atri

Atri (6km) was a Roman colony (Hadria) which gave its name to the Adriatic sea. There is the Palazzo Ducale, a number of fine churches, especially the 13th century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, museums, good shops and spectacular views from its medieval walls.

Lago Do Penne

Lago Di Penne

Lago Di Penne (27km) is an artificial lake made in the 1960's, south-west of Penne. It is now a World Wildlife Fund Nature Reserve with a Botanical Garden and hosts more than 160 species of birds.

Castel Del Monte

Castel Del Monte

Castel Del Monte (27km) A highly attractive small hill town close to the Campo Imperatore and the principal setting for the George Clooney film, "The American"
